Dear WAMFT Community,
As we step into 2025, I am filled with excitement and gratitude as I begin my term as President of the Washington State Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. This moment is one of deep significance for me, and I want to take a moment to reflect on what it means to be part of this incredible community.
First, thank you. Thank you to the members, mentors, colleagues, and friends who have supported me on this journey. Your encouragement and belief in me have been invaluable, and I am honored to step into this role with the strength of your trust behind me.
Our organization thrives because of the passionate, dedicated volunteer board members who bring their time, energy, and vision to WAMFT. It is truly a privilege to work alongside this extraordinary group. I also want to acknowledge the legacy of those who have come before me—presidents, board members, and leaders who have laid the foundation for the work we continue today. Their contributions remind us of the enduring power of community and collective effort.
As we enter this new year, we do so in a complex social and political climate shaped by recent elections and ongoing challenges. For many, this season has brought fear, disappointment, uncertainty, and frustration. I want to acknowledge those feelings and affirm that WAMFT is here as a place of connection, advocacy, and support.
In the face of uncertainty, I am committed to servant leadership. My hope is to start with myself—seeking ways to show up authentically, connect deeply, and foster resilience within our community. Together, we can build a sustainable path forward for our profession by strengthening our advocacy efforts, not only within the MFT community but alongside our colleagues in mental and healthcare fields.
I will also be working closely with our committee chairs to enhance programming that bolsters networking, education, and opportunities to elevate systemic thinkers. I hope WAMFT can be a calm, steady voice—holding space for curiosity, growth, and security for our communities and clients. To the clinicians on the front lines, know that we are here to support you.
Through the isomorphic process we hold so dear, myself and the other members of the executive committee aim to offer the same support to your board members. By nurturing their security and strength, they can, in turn, uplift you. This is our collective hope: to empower each other, to create spaces where healing and transformation thrive, and to ensure that the values of curiosity, empathy, and advocacy guide us forward.
I am humbled and honored by the opportunity to serve as your president, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities this year will bring. Together, let’s make 2025 a year of connection, growth, and progress for WAMFT and our profession.
Cheers to the journey ahead,
Billie Tyler, PhD, LMFT
WAMFT President
