About the Event

Tell Me More: Highlights and Challenges of Online Group Consultation from an IFS/MFT Lens

Session Description

In this presentation participants will be introduced to a range of details to consider when launching and leading Online Group Consultation and will directly experience or observe the role the Self of the Therapist plays in this context.

As the number of healing professionals increases around the world, so does the need for self-aware, proficient, ethical, and inclusive supervision and consultation.

Developing an international Online Group Consultation (OGC) Community over the past five years and consulting nearly 200 students from 23 countries solidifies the value these vibrant and diverse groups offer both healing professionals and the clients/patients we serve. This specific work emerged for the presenter during the pandemic out of an unbidden familiarity and fluency from a decade of homebound online learning, therapy, and consultation following a traumatic injury.

OGC doesn’t simply fulfill a need; it provides a unique opportunity to connect, support, and deepen the self of the therapist awareness, proficiency, and cultural sensitivity. The dimensions present in online groups offer greater diversity than we find in many of our communities. Interacting with a range of locations, languages, religions, and cultural traditions encourages group members to participate, appreciate, and witness a wide range of parts, interactions, and systems.

The strengths of OGC emerge from the initial logistics that can feel daunting or intimidating enough to discourage clinicians from offering either group OR online consultation, never mind both.

Navigating time zone differences, language barriers, cultural differences, banking restrictions, and experiences of regional and international crises amplify the consultation experience in ways that can be leveraged to promote heightened parts-detection, confidence, inclusion, compassion and Self energy in group members.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and anticipate at least three unique logistics, benefits, and challenges of launching and leading Online Group Consultation (OGC).
  • Identify two or more ways OGC integrates Self of the Therapist—for both leaders and group members.
  • Identify two or more ways OGC offers a unique opportunity for expanded DEI awareness and cultural sensitivity beyond their local community.
